The
Short Answer
Luminism was
an American art movement of the late 19 th century associated
with the
Hudson River School of Painting. Luminism's
focus was on the dramatic effects that light has on objects,
especially nature. I have borrowed this term because I am also
very focused on the effects of light on objects, although I must
confess my frustation for references to the observation of light
in painting and claims that someone is a "painter
of light." My
reaction to such statements is--Duh!!!
Visible light is a narrow band of electromagnetic energy which
the human eye is designed to perceive- and in color. Without
our ability to perceive and quantify visible light much more
than painting would be impossible.
To say painting
is about light is like saying breathing is all about--air.
My use of the
term Luminism not only speaks to my highlighting the glory
of nature but
the spiritual aspects which are metaphorically
refered to as "the light."
When I started
using the term Shamanic Luminism it applied to specific
subject
matter that I was working with such as rock
art in an “amplified” setting or to Stonehenge- type
natural configurations. Now I regard Shamanic Luminism as the
vessel in which I create all my paintings.
My painting process involves me as the conduit that not only
creates an uplifting visual offering but imbues the art with
certain energetics as well. I paint in a mental and spiritual
centeredness. I paint with Intent and Intensity. I strive to
create within Impeccability.
By doing so,
I am also escorting the viewer of my work into "other
worlds" of perception, in the tradition of the Shaman.
For years I have been an admirer and seeker of Native American
Rock Art. My belief is that these images are much more than images-that
they to are imbued with energetics as well. I also believe that
most of them celebrate the subtle energy that is already in a
place. They are creative signposts for the mysteries of our planet.
The shaman/artists
who laid down these devices did so in a frame of reference
without fragmentation of unity--our western classification
system that pigeonholes people and ideas, dampening and negating
the awesome immensity of Universe.
The concepts of Religion, Science and Art were all intertwined
when most Rock Art was made. Indeed, these separation concepts
were not even listed on the cognitive menu. Creations were made
with holistic intent- and holistic result.
This is what I strive for when I am at the easel. And, Shamanic
Luminism is ever evolving. What Shamanic Luminism is may ultimately
help define you as well. Stay tuned!
