Faerie Ring
16 x 20
Long before we set foot in Ireland, I had checked out the location of megalithic structures in this ancient land. As far as I know there is only one place in Ireland where you can find a cluster of three stone rings--so of course we had to go there! I have been obsessed with Stonehenge-type phenomenon since I was a kid and I finally got to go to one--well, no--several. This is a portrayal of the third stone ring we found on top of a hill near Cong. It was the smallest of the three and had trees growing in its center. It seemed to have a real feminine feel to it. We found out later that there was actually a fourth ring that was nearby and was out of view because of a high stone fence. As we left this ring we crossed a low stone fence. I stepped over but Cindy needed a little help so I removed a large loose stone from the wall. She stepped over and I started to walk off. She asked if I should replace the stone and I saw that the wall was in general disrepair. I said no- why bother. As soon as those words left my mouth I was thwacked in the calf with a stinging nettle. I yelped and looked down to see--nothing! No nearby plants of any sort. Yet, the stinging continued to increase- just like a nettle sting. Well--I replaced the stone on the low wall. This was the first of many lessons for me about honoring the magic island and respecting its customs and the way things worked there.
