Lemon Cliffs

adobe building, hollyhocks

18 x 24

This piece is interesting because it was initially conceived during a motor trip to Chaco Canyon via Abiquiu. This is near the top of all the formations that are the backdrop to the Ghost Ranch on the Chama River.
I was attracted to the slanting ridge that streeked across the view. Below the ridge and the caprock was the sheer cliffs of yellowish strata. It was accented by a tree group in the middle ground. But overall the view was really nothing special.

I decided to enhance the scene when I worked it up in the studio. The trees in the painting are cottonwoods I found in a completely different area to replace the unspectacular elms in the original. I also added the wetlands to add some reflections that water provides. So if you want to see this spot in person- you are in for a challenge- and will need a healthy dose of imagination.
