Spring Lake

24 x 18
I visited this lake in mid- June, almost summer, but at 11,000 feet this high lake was still surrounded by snow fields. To get to the lake we walked in the center of giant snow humps that were the remnants of last winter's snow pack in the shade of giant spruce trees.
The signs of spring are evident, however, because the lake had thawed and some of the grasses and shrubs were greening up and budding out in the places where the snows had receded.
I took some liberties with the actual scene to create some drama in the painting. I pulled the round ridge in the middle ground forward to create greater depth. I also created the trees and rocks in the foreground on the right to allow me to create a feeling of depth.
Again, as I have mentioned before, this is an advantage that painters have over photographers. At least that was true before the advent of digital photography which now allows photographers to manipulate the landscape just like painters do.
